Inside CED: Why We’re Building Complete Drilling Packages — Not Just Drill Rigs

Buying a drill rig is easy.

Getting everything else right is where exploration programmes start becoming interesting.

The rig arrives.

Excellent.

Then somebody asks:

Where's the compressor?

Where are the rods?

Did we order enough bits?

Which pump are we using?

Where are the service kits?

Who has the hydraulic spares?

How are we moving the diesel?

Who is commissioning the machine?

And our personal favourite:

Who actually knows how to operate the bloody thing?

Welcome back to Inside CED Workshop.

This week we're looking beyond drill rig manufacturing and into something becoming increasingly important to Cylinder Exploration Drilling:

building complete exploration drilling packages.

Because CED doesn't want to simply manufacture a machine, put it in a container and wish the customer good luck.

We want to help build the operation around it.

A Drill Rig Is Not a Drilling Programme

This sounds obvious.

But it's probably one of the most important distinctions in exploration equipment procurement.

A drill rig is one machine.

A drilling programme is a system.

Take a diamond drilling operation.

The rig might be the largest single piece of equipment, but it isn't going very far without the correct drill string, core barrels, bits, reaming shells, casing, pumps, drilling fluids, tooling, spare parts and people.

RC drilling takes that dependency even further.

You have the rig.

Now you need air.

A lot of air.

That brings compressors, hoses, manifolds, dual-wall drill pipe, hammers, bits, cyclones, splitters and sampling equipment into the conversation.

Then you still need fuel, water, support vehicles, maintenance equipment and people.

Suddenly the drill rig doesn't look like the whole purchase anymore.

It looks like one part of a much bigger machine.

Complete CED diamond drilling package with drill rig, rods, pumps and consumables
A complete CED diamond drilling package being prepared in the workshop, bringing together the tracked drill rig, drill rods, core drilling consumables, pumps, tooling and critical spares. It demonstrates CED’s approach to supplying complete exploration drilling systems rather than simply delivering a standalone drill rig.

This Is Where CED Production Is Heading

CED manufactures and supplies exploration drilling equipment across diamond drilling, Reverse Circulation, Air Core and other drilling applications.

But increasingly, we're designing proposals around the complete requirement.

That can mean:

Drill rig + compressor + pumps + drill string + consumables + critical spares + commissioning + training + personnel + ongoing technical support.

Not every customer needs all of it.

Some already have experienced drilling teams.

Some already have compressors.

Some have established workshops and supply chains.

Others are starting an exploration drilling capability almost from scratch.

The point is simple:

build the package around the project rather than forcing the project around a standard package.

Start With Four Questions

Before discussing machines, we want to understand:

Where are you drilling?

What are you drilling?

How deep are you drilling?

How many metres are you planning to drill?

Those four questions immediately tell us considerably more than:

"Please quote one diamond rig."

Then we dig further.

Road access?

Terrain?

Altitude?

Water availability?

Expected geology?

Hole diameter?

Shift pattern?

Local mechanical support?

Consumable availability?

Import restrictions?

Crew experience?

Because all of these things can influence what belongs in the package.

Diamond Drilling: The Rig Is Just the Beginning

Let's say the requirement is diamond core drilling.

The customer needs HQ and NQ capability.

Fine.

But how many metres?

Because that begins determining drill rod quantities.

What ground conditions are expected?

Because that influences bit selection, casing strategy and drilling fluids.

How remote is the programme?

Because that influences spare parts.

What's the water situation?

Because pumps and water management suddenly become critical.

Will the operation run one shift or two?

Because equipment utilisation changes.

How experienced is the crew?

Because commissioning and training requirements change.

The machine hasn't changed.

The package around it has.

And that package can make the difference between owning a drill rig and actually drilling metres.

RC Drilling: Welcome to the Air Problem

RC makes package engineering even more obvious.

People understandably focus on the rig.

We focus very quickly on the compressor.

Hole diameter and depth affect air requirements.

Ground conditions matter.

The drill string matters.

The hammer matters.

Compressor pressure and volume matter.

And if you start undersizing the air system, the impressive new RC rig sitting next to it isn't going to rescue you.

Then comes sample recovery.

Cyclone.

Splitter.

Hoses.

Sampling system.

Consumables.

Support equipment.

Again:

system, not machine.

This is why CED increasingly approaches RC equipment as a complete drilling package rather than an isolated rig sale.

Complete CED RC drilling package with tracked rig, air compressor and drill rods
A complete CED Reverse Circulation drilling package featuring a tracked RC drill rig, high-pressure air compressor, RC drill rods, hoses, sampling equipment, tooling and consumables. CED builds RC packages around the complete drilling requirement, including air supply, drill string and supporting equipment.

The Boring Box of Spares Can Be Worth More Than the Shiny Machine

Nobody photographs the service kits.

Nobody puts the spare filters on the front of the brochure.

Nobody flies halfway around the world to admire a box of hydraulic fittings.

Until something breaks.

Then suddenly that boring box becomes the most popular piece of equipment on site.

This is particularly important in remote exploration.

If a machine is operating close to an established mining centre, replacement components may be relatively straightforward.

If it's drilling somewhere genuinely remote, a missing component can mean international freight, customs, internal transport and days of lost production.

So CED wants critical spares planning to be part of the original equipment discussion.

Not the conversation everybody has after something stops.

Consumables Are Not an Afterthought Either

The same applies to drilling consumables.

Rods.

Bits.

Reamers.

Core barrels.

Inner tubes.

Core lifters.

Casing.

Shoes.

RC pipe.

Hammers.

RC bits.

Drilling fluids.

Wear components.

A customer's initial consumable package should make sense for the expected programme.

Too little stock creates downtime.

Too much of the wrong stock ties up money and fills containers with equipment nobody needs.

Getting that balance right requires understanding the programme.

Which brings us back to the beginning.

Where? What? How deep? How many metres?

Then Come the People

Here's another uncomfortable truth.

You can buy excellent equipment and still run a terrible drilling operation.

Machines need people.

CED is deliberately developing the personnel side alongside our equipment business.

Drillers.

Supervisors.

Mechanical fitters.

Technical personnel.

Commissioning support.

Training.

Operational management.

That means a customer can potentially come to CED for considerably more than hardware.

They can buy equipment and operate it themselves.

They can ask us to commission it and train their people.

They can bring CED personnel into the operation.

Or they can discuss a wider managed drilling solution.

Equipment and operations should strengthen each other.

UK. South Africa. Indonesia. One Supply Chain.

This complete-package approach also explains why CED's international structure matters.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom — leadership, international commercial operations and project coordination.

🇿🇦 South Africa — engineering, manufacturing and development of equipment including the SFM Series.

🇮🇩 Indonesia — exploration drilling equipment manufacturing and assembly.

🌍 International supply network — drilling consumables, compressors, pumps, specialist equipment and project support.

The objective isn't to manufacture every nut and bolt ourselves.

That would be ridiculous.

The objective is to understand the complete drilling requirement and bring the correct equipment together under one CED solution.

And Then There Is Logistics

This is the bit everybody loves forgetting.

Your equipment is ready.

Brilliant.

Now it needs to travel halfway around the world.

Containerisation.

Weights.

Dimensions.

Packing.

Export documentation.

Freight.

Import requirements.

Inland transport.

Site mobilisation.

Commissioning.

A drilling package is not finished when manufacturing stops.

It's finished when the customer can actually use it.

That distinction matters.

The SFM Series Pushes This Idea Even Further

Our SFM Series is increasingly becoming the physical expression of this philosophy.

Instead of asking only how to move the drill rig, we're looking at how to move the exploration operation.

The SFM family is being developed around drilling and remote-site support applications, including diamond drilling, RC/Air Core/Auger capability, water well drilling, underground applications and mobile exploration support.

Then there are modular trailer systems.

Compressor.

Water.

Diesel.

Consumables.

Tools.

Support equipment.

Put those pieces together and you begin moving beyond a vehicle-mounted rig.

You start building a mobile exploration fleet.

That's where things get interesting.

We're Not Interested in Selling You Equipment You Don't Need

Complete packages should not mean throwing everything imaginable onto a quotation.

Quite the opposite.

A good package removes unnecessary equipment just as aggressively as it adds necessary equipment.

If one compressor does the job, why supply two?

If the customer already has suitable pumps, use them.

If local consumables are readily available and technically appropriate, that changes the supply strategy.

If a project needs more critical spares because it's extremely remote, plan for it.

The objective is not the largest invoice.

The objective is an operation that works.

Because customers who drill successfully tend to need more equipment.

We quite like that model.

From Manufacturer to Drilling Partner

This is the direction CED is pushing towards.

Not simply:

"Here's our drill rig."

But:

"Tell us about your drilling programme."

Then let's work out what it actually requires.

Rig.

Compressor.

Pumps.

Consumables.

Spares.

Support equipment.

Logistics.

Commissioning.

Training.

People.

Operations.

Some projects need three of those.

Others need all of them.

CED wants the capability to provide both.

CED supplies the supporting equipment and consumables required to keep diamond, RC and other exploration drilling operations working in remote locations.

What Are You Planning to Drill?

If you're developing a mineral exploration programme in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America or further afield, talk to CED early.

Tell us:

Country. Commodity. Drilling method. Hole diameter. Expected depth. Planned metres. Terrain.

Then we can start building the package backwards from the drilling requirement.

Because the objective isn't to own more equipment.

It's to drill more metres.

And preferably without discovering halfway through mobilisation that somebody forgot the compressor hose.

This week's question:

For contractors and exploration companies: what's the piece of equipment or spare part you've seen forgotten most often when mobilising a new drilling programme?
